The cast behind Modern Family gathered on Saturday to present the prize for best comedy ensemble to the stars of The Bear at the 2024 SAG Awards.
Modern Family alums Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reminisced about their ABC show having won this category four previous times. “This really brings back memories,” said Burrell. After Vergara mentioned the popularity of her Netflix series Griselda, Stonestreet quipped, “Jesse, pay up. I told you she’d mention it in the first 10 seconds.”

Stonestreet, a Kansas native and longtime high-profile fan of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, went on to brag about his friendship with the team’s star tight end, Travis Kelce, who is currently dating Taylor Swift. “Hey, wow, I know Travis Kelce,” Stonestreet said. “I can FaceTime him right now.”
Abby Elliott, who plays Natalie on The Bear, accepted the award on behalf of her acclaimed FX series. After praising the show’s team, she went on to thank “everyone who supported actors along the way — our parents, drama teachers, friends who let us sleep on their couches for months on end, people who have helped us self-tape auditions, restaurants who have given us free beer after comedy shows and plays. Thank you so much — this is for you.”
This has been a big night for The Bear, which also saw Jeremy Allen White prevail for best male actor in a comedy series and Ayo Edebiri win for best female actor in a comedy series.
Ahead of the telecast, Oppenheimer and Barbie topped the film nominees with four apiece, with both nominated in the ceremony’s top category of best cast, facing American Fiction, The Color Purple and Killers of the Flower Moon. For the television categories, Succession led the way with five nominations, including best ensemble in a drama series. Also competing in the category are The Crown, The Gilded Age, The Last of Us and The Morning Show.
The 2024 SAG Awards airs live on Netflix on Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
